A Greece Golden Visa family file should explain two things clearly: how each applicant fits the relevant family category and which documents establish the relationship. Start with that map before paying for translations, authentication or multiple sets of certificates.

A changed surname, a child from an earlier relationship or records issued in different countries can create preparation work that is easy to overlook. This article focuses on those family-document questions. The qualifying investment and its separate evidence are covered on the Greece Golden Visa programme page.

Which family relationships should you check first?

Article 95(2) of Greece’s Migration Code, as amended by Article 43 of Law 5162/2024, identifies spouses or civil-union partners, unmarried common children under 21, unmarried children of either partner under 21 subject to the custody condition, and direct ascendants of the spouses or partners. Family permits are granted on application and expire with the sponsor’s permit.

The same provision addresses a separate three-year permit for the covered children when they reach 21, referring to the previous family permit. Do not assume that this happens without an application or that it resolves every later status question. An approaching birthday should be raised early with the professional or authority handling the file.

This is not a rule that automatically includes every person who is financially dependent on the investor. A sibling, adult child or other relative should not be put into a category merely because the family intends to move together.

Build a relationship map for the whole household

Relationship to investigateRecords to discussQuestion to resolve
Spouse or civil-union partnerMarriage or civil-union record and relevant identity recordsDoes the record establish the relationship recognized for this application?

Child from an earlier relationshipParentage and the relevant custody recordsWhich documents establish the required legal custody arrangement?
Parent or other direct ascendantRecords connecting the ascendant to the relevant spouse or partnerCan the complete relationship chain be shown?

The records above are planning examples, not an exhaustive official checklist. The receiving authority determines the evidence and format required for the particular file. A family tree can make missing links obvious, but it does not substitute for civil records.

For example, if the investor’s parent uses a surname that differs from the investor’s current surname, place the birth record and any relevant name-change or marriage record together. The useful question is not simply whether each document looks valid, but whether the set explains the connection without an unsupported assumption.

Check names, dates and parentage across the file

Read the passports and civil records side by side. Compare full names, dates of birth, parents’ names and the spelling or transliteration used in different alphabets. Mark discrepancies in a working list and ask how they should be resolved before the application is assembled.

Do not alter a scanned record to make it match another document. A discrepancy may require an explanation, an additional civil record or a correction through the issuing authority. Decide the appropriate route before paying for a translation of a version that may need replacing.

Keep the original-language document linked to its translation and any authentication. A clear filename can include the applicant, document type, issuing country and issue date. Keep personal records in a private folder rather than sharing a public link to the whole family file.

Children, custody and approaching birthdays

For a child from an earlier relationship, bring the custody position into the first document discussion. Travel permission, custody and the right to apply under an immigration category are different questions. Do not assume that a consent letter prepared for a holiday answers all three.

Ask which order, agreement or other official record establishes the legally relevant arrangement and whether further evidence is needed. Where the record uses a different legal vocabulary from the receiving jurisdiction, obtain advice about what it establishes rather than guessing from its title.

Track each child’s birthday alongside the intended filing date and sponsor’s permit expiry. If a threshold is close, ask for a written explanation of the available category, timing and next steps. Avoid relying on another family’s experience when the child’s age or custody facts differ.

Authentication and translation are separate checks

An apostille concerns the origin of a public document, such as the signature, capacity and seal; it does not certify the truth of its contents or translate it. Whether the Apostille Convention applies depends on the relevant countries and document. Other legalisation arrangements or exemptions may apply.

For certain public documents circulating between EU Member States, Regulation (EU) 2016/1191 removes the apostille requirement and provides translation-related simplifications. Its scope is limited: it does not make every document exempt or decide recognition of the legal effects of a marriage, parentage or other relationship.

For each item, confirm the issuing country, document type, original or certified-copy requirement, authentication route and accepted translation method. Ask whether a multilingual standard form is useful where the EU regulation applies. Do not order apostilles mechanically for every document or assume that authentication eliminates the need for translation.

Use a document register to avoid ordering twice

A small register makes it easier to coordinate relatives in different countries. Record the person, relationship, issuing authority, version available, issue date, format still to confirm and next action. Add an owner for each task so that two people do not request the same certificate.

  • Before ordering: confirm which version of the record is needed and whether its age matters for the receiving procedure.
  • Before translation: resolve discrepancies and confirm the required authentication sequence and accepted translator.
  • Before submission: compare the final originals, translations, identities and application details.
  • After submission: retain a private copy of exactly what was filed and the receipt or reference supplied.

There is no universal certificate-expiry period that should be invented for the whole family file. Obtain the receiving authority’s current instructions. A document’s issue date, a translation date and the date an application is filed are different facts.

Keep the family file separate from investment evidence

Use one folder for the sponsor’s investment and one for each person’s identity and family evidence. Cross-reference the sponsor rather than copying every investment document into every working folder. This makes it easier to see whether an outstanding item concerns the investment, an individual applicant or the relationship between them.

Agree how updates will be communicated if a passport is renewed, a name changes or a new family event occurs. Keep an older submitted version for the record, but make the current version unmistakable. Ask how family filings and any appointments will be coordinated with the sponsor’s application.

El European residency comparison framework helps place family questions alongside work rights and residence expectations. The Greece destination guide connects the current FYPAS coverage and the programme details.

Common family-document questions

Does each relative need a separate investment?

The family framework is linked to the sponsor’s qualifying residence basis. Each family member still needs the relevant application and personal evidence. Do not confuse a separate family application with a separate qualifying investment.

Will an apostille fix a name discrepancy?

No. Authentication does not reconcile identities or amend a civil record. Resolve the discrepancy and establish the relationship through the appropriate evidence.

Can I use a checklist from another country?

It may help you identify questions, but it does not establish Greek filing requirements. Confirm the receiving authority, category and document format for this application.
