Spain Work Visa
Spain's ordinary employed-work route lets a qualifying third-country worker reside and work in Spain after an employer obtains the initial residence-and-work authorization and the worker completes the visa, entry, Social Security and TIE stages. The initial authorization follows the approved activity for up to one year and a general qualifying renewal can run for four years.

Financial reference
Salary & fee context
SalaryThere is no separate universal immigration-income threshold encoded for the worker: the employment contract must comply with Spanish labour law and the applicable collective agreement. For 2026 the SMI is EUR 1,221/month and EUR 17,094/year for a full-time reference, but the immigration rule is not reduced to one universal salary scalar. The current initial residence authorization fee (Modelo 790-052, 2.1.3) is EUR 10.94 and the first TIE is EUR 16.08. For work authorizations lasting at least six months, the employer also pays Modelo 790-062: EUR 203.84 when remuneration is below 2x SMI or EUR 407.71 when it is at least 2x SMI. A current residence/work renewal authorization fee is EUR 16.40; the employer-side renewed work-authorization fee is EUR 81.54 and the renewal TIE is EUR 19.30. Consular visa fees are separate and can vary by nationality and consular post.

From residence to permanent status and citizenship
These are separate legal pathways with their own conditions. The timelines below reflect the current structured data for this route.
From 5 years
Spanish long-term national residence is a separate status generally available after five years of legal and continuous residence. Continuity is generally not broken by absences of up to six consecutive months if total absences do not exceed ten months during the five-year period; for qualifying work-related absences the aggregate allowance is eighteen months. No general Spanish-language test is encoded for national long-term residence.
Yes
Nationality by residence is separate from the work authorization. The Civil Code generally requires ten years of legal and continuous residence immediately before the application, reduced to five years for refugees and two years for nationals by origin of Ibero-American countries, Andorra, the Philippines, Equatorial Guinea or Portugal, and for Sephardim, with additional one-year categories. The procedure generally uses CCSE and, where the applicant is not exempt or dispensed, DELE A2 or higher. Dual-citizenship treatment is nationality-specific, so no single yes/no outcome applies to all applicants. No universal years_to_citizenship scalar is stored.
Why consider it
Key benefits
Best for
Workers with a qualifying Spanish job offer
The route is designed around an employer-led offer and ordinary employment in Spain.
Benefit
Direct right to employed work after the authorization becomes effective
The permit authorizes the approved employed activity once the worker completes the required Social Security registration.
Benefit
Limited self-employment compatibility can exist from the initial permit
Current law permits self-employed activity during the initial authorization when employed work remains the main activity, subject to the statutory conditions.
Benefit
A general renewal can broaden work rights substantially
A standard four-year renewal, when applicable, permits employed and self-employed activity anywhere in Spain and in any sector.
Benefit
Later family reunification is available
After meeting the sponsor timing and family-reunification conditions, qualifying family members can obtain residence and eligible family members can work.
Benefit
Can build toward long-term residence and nationality
Actual qualifying legal residence can count toward separate Spanish long-term residence and nationality-by-residence pathways.

Conditions & watch-outs
Condition
The employer starts the ordinary initial authorization
The worker normally cannot file this ordinary initial employed-work authorization alone; the employer or authorized business representative submits it.
Condition
The national employment situation can control eligibility
The employer must normally fit the difficult-to-fill catalogue, demonstrate recruitment difficulty, or qualify under a statutory/international exception.
Condition
The employment contract must satisfy Spanish labour standards
Contract terms, pay and continuity must comply with applicable law and collective agreements; special salary rules apply to part-time contracts.
Condition
Employer solvency and compliance are part of the immigration test
The employer must be properly registered, current on tax and Social Security obligations and financially capable of meeting the contract.
Limitation
The initial authorization is usually occupation- and region-limited
Unless the national-employment-situation restriction does not apply, the initial permit is limited to an autonomous-community geographic area and a specified occupation.
Condition
Social Security registration is essential
The initial authorization's effectiveness is suspended until the worker is registered in the appropriate Social Security regime within the post-entry deadline.
Watch out
The initial permit is not always a full year
Its duration follows the authorized activity with a maximum of one year; a shorter initial authorization can also affect the first renewal period.
Watch out
Family reunification is generally a later procedure
Ordinary family reunification is separate from the initial employer-sponsored authorization and has its own residence-timing, financial, housing and family-category rules.

Application journey
How the process works
The ordinary Spain employed-work route is employer-led. The employer first seeks the initial residence-and-work authorization, the worker then applies personally for the visa after approval, and the authorization becomes effective through entry and Social Security registration before the TIE stage.
Confirm the employer, occupation and labour-market route
Confirm the proposed employer, occupation, contract conditions and whether the national employment situation is satisfied through the difficult-to-fill catalogue, a labour-market test, an international agreement or another statutory exception.
Do not assume every vacancy qualifies automatically. The labour-market path depends on the occupation, province and any applicable statutory exception.
Prepare the employer-led authorization application
Prepare the EX-03 application, signed employment contract, worker passport and qualification evidence, plus the employer's corporate, representation, solvency and compliance documentation.
The employer or legally authorized representative is the party entitled to file the ordinary initial authorization.
Submit the initial residence-and-work authorization
The employer submits the application electronically through the authorized channel and the applicable residence and work-authorization fees are paid.
A three-month administrative decision period is not a complete end-to-end immigration timeline.
Apply personally for the work visa after approval
After the favorable authorization is notified to the employer, the worker normally has one month to apply personally for the visa at the competent Spanish diplomatic mission or consular office.
The visa stage includes passport, criminal-record, medical and fee evidence under the current procedure.
Complete the consular visa stage
The consular mission examines the visa application, and after approval the worker must collect the visa within the stated period.
The current procedure gives one month to collect the granted visa after notification.
Enter Spain and complete Social Security registration
Enter Spain during the visa's validity and complete affiliation and registration in the relevant Social Security regime so that the residence-and-work authorization becomes effective.
The authorization's effectiveness is suspended until the required Social Security registration occurs.
Obtain the TIE and maintain renewal conditions
After Social Security registration, apply personally for the TIE and maintain the employment/residence conditions required for renewal or a permitted employer change.
The ordinary general renewal is four years when the statutory conditions are met, subject to the shorter-initial-authorization exception.

Common questions
Frequently asked questions
What is the ordinary Spain Work Visa route?
It is the employer-led framework for an initial temporary residence and work authorization for employed activity, followed by the worker's visa and post-entry formalities.
Who submits the initial authorization?
The employer or business, personally or through an authorized representative, submits the ordinary initial employed-work authorization.
Do I need a job offer before applying?
Yes for this ordinary route. A compliant signed employment contract is a core part of the employer's authorization application.
What is the national employment situation test?
The employer normally must show that the position can be filled from abroad under the difficult-to-fill catalogue, through evidence of recruitment difficulty, or because a statutory or international-agreement exception applies.
How long can the initial authorization last?
It follows the duration of the activity to be performed, with a statutory maximum of one year.
Can I change employer during the first year?
Current rules allow employer changes in defined circumstances. After three months, a change in the same occupation can be possible, and earlier changes can be allowed in specified employer-breach or unforeseen-employer circumstances.
Can I be self-employed on this permit?
Conditionally. The initial employed-work authorization also permits self-employed activity when the employed activity remains the main activity, subject to the statutory conditions and notification rule for involuntary job loss.
Is this a remote-work visa for a foreign employer?
No. This route is built around employed work authorized through the sponsoring employer. Foreign-employer remote work should be assessed under Spain's international-teleworker or another appropriate route.
How long does the employer authorization take?
The published statutory decision period for the initial employer-filed authorization is up to three months. That does not include the separate visa, entry, Social Security and TIE stages.
How long does the consular visa stage take?
After the favorable authorization, the worker normally has one month to apply for the visa, and the current procedure provides a separate one-month consular decision period.
When does the work authorization become effective?
Its effectiveness is suspended until the worker completes the required Social Security registration after legal entry to Spain within the stated deadline.
How long is a normal renewal?
A general qualifying renewal is four years. A special shorter rule can apply when the initial authorization was granted for less than one year.
Can my family join me?
Potentially through the separate family-reunification framework, generally after the sponsor has resided in Spain for at least one year and has requested residence for at least another year, subject to the family and financial requirements.
Can this route lead to long-term residence?
Potentially. Spanish long-term national residence is a separate status generally based on five years of legal and continuous residence, subject to its own continuity rules.
Can work residence count toward Spanish citizenship?
Qualifying legal residence can count, but nationality is separate. The general residence period is ten years, with shorter statutory periods for certain categories, plus integration and other requirements.
