The Portugal Golden Visa timeline in 2026 cannot be reduced to one reliable number of months. The process includes investment preparation, document collection, submission through the ARI Portal, AIMA review, appointment and biometrics where required, the final decision and residence-card issuance.
Portuguese law contains decision deadlines for residence-permit requests, but those deadlines are not the same as an end-to-end estimate from the day an investor starts preparing the case. Actual administrative processing can also take longer than a statutory deadline.
Planning rule: separate the time you control, such as investment and document preparation, from the time controlled by AIMA, such as review, appointment availability, decision and card issuance.

Is there an official Golden Visa processing time?
There is no single official end-to-end processing time that covers the entire journey from choosing an investment to receiving the residence card.
Article 82 of Portugal’s Immigration Law provides that a request for the grant of a residence permit should be decided within 90 days and a renewal request within 60 days. These are statutory decision deadlines. They should not be marketed as a promise that a new Golden Visa investor will finish the whole process in 90 days.
Portuguese case law has also distinguished the rules for an initial grant from those for renewal. In particular, the statutory tacit-approval mechanism attached to the missed 60-day renewal deadline should not be presented as automatic approval of an initial ARI application after 90 days.
Stage 1: choose a qualifying investment route
The process starts before the ARI application. The investor must first choose a route that is still available under the current framework. In 2026, the main options are job creation, qualifying scientific research, qualifying cultural activity, non-real-estate collective investment undertakings, and qualifying company capitalisation combined with employment.
Real-estate investment and the former general €1.5 million capital-transfer route are no longer available for new applications. Reviewing outdated options at the beginning can therefore waste time before an application even exists.
Stage 2: structure and document the investment
The preparation period varies significantly by route. A collective-investment route may involve due diligence, account opening, subscription, international transfer and fund documentation. A company route may require incorporation or capitalisation plus employment arrangements. Research and cultural routes rely on their own qualifying institutions and evidence.
There is no responsible universal timeframe for this stage. The useful objective is not to make the transaction as quickly as possible, but to ensure that the structure and evidence meet the ARI requirements before submission.
Stage 3: prepare the application documents
Personal and investment documentation can run in parallel with investment preparation. Depending on the case, this may include passport and entry evidence, criminal-record certificates, healthcare coverage, tax and Social Security documentation, translations, apostilles or legalisation, and route-specific evidence of the investment.
Foreign documents can be one of the most unpredictable parts of the preparation stage. Certificate issue dates, certification requirements and translation needs should therefore be planned around the intended submission date rather than collected too early without checking validity rules.
Stage 4: submit through the ARI Portal
AIMA’s ARI Portal is the digital channel for registering the application and, where applicable, the legal representative and associated family-reunification requests. The process includes uploading documents and generating the payment document for the applicable application-analysis fee.
AIMA’s current portal guidance distinguishes between an application that has been accepted and can proceed to scheduling and an application containing errors that must be corrected and resubmitted. An accepted application at this stage is not the same thing as the final residence-permit decision.
Stage 5: AIMA review and corrections
AIMA reviews the personal documents, investment evidence and other legal requirements. If information is incomplete, inconsistent or no longer current, the applicant may need to correct or supplement the file.
There is no single public number that can safely be used as the expected duration of this review for every ARI applicant. Processing depends on the individual file and the authority’s operational capacity.
Stage 6: appointment and biometrics
For an initial ARI, the process can require a physical appointment in Portugal for document formalities and biometric collection. Scheduling is connected to the progress of the application and AIMA’s operational availability.
Applicants should therefore keep travel planning flexible until an appointment is actually confirmed. A projected appointment date from an adviser, forum or previous case is not an official booking.
Stage 7: decision and residence-card issuance
After the required checks and formalities, AIMA makes the residence-permit decision. Approval of the application is followed by the steps needed for issuance of the residence card.
The legal decision deadline should be distinguished from card production and delivery. For planning purposes, do not treat “decision” and “card in hand” as the same milestone.
How does Golden Visa renewal work in 2026?
Renewal now follows a more digital process. Since 16 February 2026, AIMA has processed ARI renewal applications electronically through its Renewals Portal.
AIMA states that an in-person appointment is no longer required merely to submit an ARI renewal. However, the authority can subsequently request a physical appointment when biometric data needs to be collected. Digital renewal therefore does not mean that every renewal is guaranteed to be completed without a visit.
AIMA’s current FAQ says the Renewals Portal is used for ARI titles with validity expired from 22 February 2020 through 31 December 2026. Operational windows can change, so the portal should be checked at the time of renewal.
What can delay the Portugal Golden Visa process?
- choosing an investment structure that does not clearly satisfy the current ARI rules;
- incomplete or inconsistent personal documents;
- expired criminal-record or other time-sensitive certificates;
- missing apostille, legalisation or translation requirements;
- insufficient evidence of the investment or transfer of capital;
- errors in the ARI Portal submission;
- requests for additional information or corrections;
- changes to passport or personal data during processing;
- appointment availability and administrative capacity;
- additional complexity from multiple family applications.
What do applicant experiences tell us?
Recent applicant reports continue to show substantial variation in ARI processing and appointment timing. Community trackers and individual cases can be useful for understanding possible bottlenecks, but they are not representative statistics and should not be converted into a promised “typical” processing time.
For FYPAS, the official procedure and legal deadlines are the baseline. Applicant experience is useful only as practical context around how variable the administrative journey can be.
How to reduce avoidable delays
- Confirm that the chosen route is currently eligible before transferring capital.
- Build a document checklist specific to that investment route.
- Check issue dates, translation and certification requirements before submission.
- Keep passport, address, tax and contact information current.
- Save proof of submission and payment.
- Respond promptly to correction or document requests.
- Do not rely on unofficial appointment estimates when arranging travel.
- Keep the investment compliant while the ARI and renewals depend on it.
Frequently asked questions
Will my Portugal Golden Visa be approved in 90 days?
That is not a responsible promise. The law contains a 90-day decision deadline for an initial residence-permit request, but the full Golden Visa timeline includes stages before and after that decision process, and actual administrative processing may exceed statutory deadlines.
Does an accepted ARI Portal application mean final approval?
No. Acceptance can mean that the case is able to proceed to the next procedural stage. The final residence-permit decision occurs later.
How long does it take to get an AIMA appointment?
AIMA does not publish one universal appointment timeframe for every ARI case. Timing depends on case progress and operational availability.
Is renewal now fully online?
The renewal application is submitted electronically through AIMA’s Renewals Portal. AIMA can still call the applicant for an in-person biometric appointment when necessary.
Does missing the 90-day initial deadline mean automatic approval?
No. Portuguese case law has held that the tacit-approval rule in Article 82 is tied to renewal rather than an initial residence-permit grant. Individual legal remedies should be assessed separately with appropriate professional advice.
Next step: plan the process in phases
